One again - i didn't post many progress picture of my gardenias, but I was working on it as often as I cold. And finally here is rewarding finish. I'm pleased overall. I definitely will need to work on photoshoot of this painting and attempt to get rid of all reflections, but it is not impotent. Important part - it is finished. I'm happy with it. This will be my show piece for 2012... (as soon it dries)

Today I'm celebrating 3-d Anniversary of my blog, what for me mean much more then just putting some blah-stuff on Internet.

During winter of 2009 my life took another turn what change a lot of things around me.. on a good way and not so good way, but whatever it was about the most impotent part was - all those changes made me to return to my favorite activity, what I was neglecting for about 20 years... It happened to be a painting.

About 3 year ago I started paint regularly, just like I did when I was a kid and then teenager...

My first trip to the art store was a total disaster. I knew nothing about art supply here and wasn't that sure what I'm looking for... I started asking about tempera and girl in a store game me that strange look and then pointed me to the self with bottles looking like some sort of exterior paint...
No, it didn't go to well at beginning... But in a few month in already was not that bad. I found a lot of help from my new friends on WetCanvas.com and quickly started my journey in world of oil pastels (love those!).

At the end of my first painting year I decided to enter at my first ever art show and was totally in shock when realized that won one of the top awards. I didn't think I'm that good. I still didn't think I'm that good. But it was a sign saying me: "You will be a total idiot to give it up again!" And therefore I continue.

Hopefully it all will start making sense some day. And maybe - not. But mean while... I'm in love with what I do and hopefully somebody also will enjoy it... and then... It already makes all the sense in the World....

... and this journey is going to continue!...

Just like that - my rose painting is finished. This is my second painting of our beautiful climbing roses we have growing for years on our back yard... I love that bush and happy that i can recreate its beauty in my art works.

Now I'll need to go back to my Gardenias painting and finish those beauties.

Did two sessions with color. First one - just a light glaze (what you can see on vase)

and second one - more heavy on a rose itself. So far I'm pleased, but still have way to go.

Singe red rose. WIP Oil.

I was going to paint this one for a while... Wanted to do something not too complicated with clear glass and flowers and ended up playing with the same "Climbing Blaze" roses what were my model for "Awakening" about two years ago..

Roses are red, vase is... green, but so far I'm working on underpainting, what naturally is neutral.

Titanium White and Payne's Gray.

Not entirely done yet, but almost there. One more W/B session and then - color.

I didn't post my progress on this painting, what doesn't mean I didn't work with it..

But it was slow process and i didn't want to post it here till I have some more solid picture..

what I happened to have today.

I finished my black/white egg tempera underpainting.

That was the most time consuming process requiring most meticulous rendering.

Now it is fun time - I may start with color.. in a few days after tempera feels dry.

"Lady in Red". Another Cymbidium orchid WIP.

This painting will be my entry to monthly challenge on Floral/Botanical forum of WetCanvas.com what I'm hosting this month. being a hostess I;m about the only one who is not done with own painting yet (many people managed to finish two or more and I just started on mine yesterday).

It is one more Orchid painting done in Oil with Liquin (alkyd) medium on panel. I gave myself whole day to finish with all preliminary blocking but ended up doing even a little bit more then my original plan was. I like it. Red is one of my favorite colors and sure works well in those flowers. Very limited palette so far.
Alizarin Crimson, Prussian Blue, some Titanium White, Olive Green, Yellow Ochre and Payne's Gray.
I may need another session of two to finish it, all depends of time what I'll have to work on it and of course of how paint will be acting.

On our way from Yellowstone to Teton National Park we got to met huge herd of buffalo. Crowds of magnificent animals were roaming across of the valley, across of the highway and didn't care a bit about us, humans around and any of tour transportation needs. Traffic had to stop for a while... except for bison traffic!.. Even we lost some time and returned to Jackson very late, I got hundreds and hundreds of pictures of those hundreds and hundreds of buffalo. It was amazing experience what I hope will result in several future paintings. This is just first small study I did the other day. Oil sticks and oil with Liquin on panel.

Pronghorn Antelopes are just too cute to ignore them!... During our trip to the West we saw those little guys just about everywhere and I'm afraid I gave my husband a reason to think that I'm sort of obsessed with taking of numerous pictures of those creatures!..

Honestly, I just finding them very curious to observe and very good subject to paint.

But I didn't paint any.. till now. This is just a little study, but I'm sure I'll be working on painting(s)

of group of those beautiful animals and with some more picturesque background that just a some dry grass here and there.

I did a quick sketch with a pastel pencil on my canvas and Finished it with oils. Here he is - Mr. Pronghorn !..

Last night I worked some more with my kiwi and finally realized, that if I continue, it will be totally different painting... perhaps a better one, but different, not what I was imagining when I started.

My original idea came to its logical end. I'm done with this work.

With this in mind I put it up vertical ( yes, I painted in on flat, just one of those things) to take a good look and decide - IF in fact I'm done...

Next what i know: my desk-lamp dropped down from the shelf on my desk, knocked down a bottle with white spirit (what happened to be open) and all my brushes, solvent went all over place!... What a mess!.. But somehow I managed to rescue thee painting!..

It was a sign to be saying to me: "leave it along already!". So I do. It will need some finishing touch-up with medium, but no more paint. Perhaps when it will be dry, I'll take better picture of it.

No - back to those Gardenias!

So far my kiwi painting is drying and getting ready for me (and I am getting ready for IT) I'' working on some small projects... something like semi-daily paintings... However I'm quickly getting tired of those. Maybe because in my mind I have something bigger and just that beautiful, that my evening etudes looking small and unworthy... One of my latest (but also very old ideas) was to paint some white gardenia in all their glory... I was looking for perfect composition for a while and finally came up with something what I liked.

I also wanted to give a try to so called "True Gesso" panels. I do not have enough time make those on my own, so I had to order some from manufacturer... and when it came, I knew - those are support for my gardenias and jump-started with this painting the very next day.

So far I'm on tempera- underpainting and trying to get right values down and blend everything to perfection or nearly so... I have to say: I LOVE the board. I wouldn't event try something else for my tempera works from now one. Tru Gesso panels are turned to be true enjoyment and I'm looking forward to do more, but for today, perhaps it is a good time to stop.

After some more oil glazing I had to return to my tempera work and make some adjustments. I like it better now and as soon it dries I'll be ready for more glazing. I feel I'm going meet my own deadline for this painting and should be finished till the end of November, what is great, because I have 3 more big projects to finish till the middle of January and I do not have too much time to do it all.

Another small painting for upcoming group show in December... I tried working with Gouache on Italian-made canvas covered panel. Factory stated it will accepts oil, acrylic and gouache... and it did! In a few days I can varnish it and then it will be ready to be framed on the same manner as any Oil or Acrylic painting, what is nice - no messing with glass!

I have few of those little frames I can use, so this time '2-nd Floor Gallery" will be getting something very new from me. Psst, it is a secret!...

Yesterday Night (or was in technically THIS night?... perhaps it was) I finished with first glaze of local color. have few pieces I missed, but I have no concern about it... I will do it later. It was nice painting session. I had to stop around 2 AM, too bad... I just could keep going and going. And now I'll have to wait another few days, till it dries to the point I can continue working. It shouldn't be that long, I went with fast drying medium by Charvin. It DIES dry fast and I really like how it works with my paints (what I couldn't say about their glazing medium, for some reason I had a hard time with that one).

So... till next painting session!...

Kiwi painting... finishing of underpainting.

I still working on last stage of tempera underpainting... This time - over blue glaze. When I'm done with it, it will be nice gray-scale underpainting, ready for local color. It will be mostly appearing as neutral, but in actually it will be so called "optical gray" - combination of all primary colors.

Very intriguing and I'm getting there.

Another small work in Western pastel series. While visiting our friends in Idaho, Jim and I went ATV riding in the desert. I took my little "all weather proof" very outdoorsy digital camera instead my big SLR camera and I was happy I did!.. We got a little big of everything - sand, rain and yes, once again - high heat. But also we got some great photos and videos and had totally wonderful time.

And I hope to turn some of those memories into beautiful paintings. "Dunes" is a one of them.

Magical scene what I saw on a way back from Tenon National Park to Jackson, Wyoming. Just the right place, just the right light, just the right colors... I never would have enough time to paint it on location, till it is all gone, but I had my camera to preserve the moment and painted it just as I remember that beautiful evening.

Kiwi painting... second stage of tempera work.

Not much to say- I finished second stage of white tempera painting over yellow glaze of oil. This stage is more accurate compare to the first one and I like how medium is acting for me much better compare to very beginning of this work. And now. when it finished, it has to dry few more days.

Beginning of tempera painting over imprimatura is looking exiting and mysterious. I have to change amount of egg medium to make sure that paint works for me the way I like it... And most of the time it is successful. I can not wait to see this finished, BUT... to have it finished well, I will have to take my time...

New Still Life with Kiwi. Update #1.

I finished my work with ink and sealed whole painting with initial layer of oil. It has to be very correct, but doesn't really have to be totally perfect at this stage... And it is not perfect. Claybord is not the easiest surface for Oil paints, but after it took the primary layers, things will be getting easier and more controllable. I;'m very much looking forward to it.

My next step will be value modeling in tempera. Much more complex, compare to the ink version.

Still Life with Kiwi. WIP.

Another show project and it is just what I called it - still life with kiwi. When finished it will be one more Oil painting, but mean while I'm working on underpainting with india ink and now it is more-less watercolor. This stage is the most complicated and most important. I'm working on Ampersand Claybord and didn't make my final choices on how exactly I want to see it finished just yet...

I still have time, I just wish I would have more of it.

Soon it will be a month after my last blog post.. This summer keeps me away from posting, one thing happened after another and I only have so much time to do it all.

This month I pulled my husband Jim off his job to make me a company during my trip to the West.

It was very intensive event, lots of driving, visiting Wyoming and Idaho, staying for a while at art Mecca - Jackson Hole, cruising Tetons and Yellowstone with my new camera.

Trip was totally priceless and it was a great opportunity to finally meet some of my friends with whom we only wrought each other online... for years. But never met in person till now.

After few days in Jackson, Jim and I went to see Gary Keimig @ Silver Sage gallery in Duboise.

If we ever will be at Jackson and will have some extra time to spend this is definitely place to visit. Road to Duboise is all about beautiful scenery and you have a great chance to meet all the sorts of wildlife there... especially if you will pull of main highway. We saw eagles, grizzly bear and many landscapes to die for. Sure I'm going paint some of it, but not all at the same time. Meanwhile I'm suggesting you to visit (OK, just virtual visit this time, but maybe if next time you are in Wyoming you will stop by to see his beautiful paintings!)

"Orchids in Ruby Glass" Oil on panel.

Today I received some great news right out of my mail box... My painting "Orchids in Ruby Glass" was accepted to Audubon Artists annual show @ Salmagundi Art Club, 47 Fifth Ave., NYC.

It is a great honor to me and.. my first show in NYC! Good news - I should be back from Wyoming right before show will be open and hopefully will be able to attend reception!

Mean while I urgently need to frame the painting and talk with my shipping agent about delivery... complicated part about it is - I'll be out of State when it all will need to be done, but we hope to figure out something.

I see a trip to faming shop in my nearest future!

Last night started another pastel painting. Very small, good study size. I took the same subject what I did before in Oil Pastels - scene from the local wooded area... sun-lighted and simple.

I want to keep this one very light without heavy pastel layering and to do so I started with watercolor underpainting. I put all major shapes down last night, dried it and started with some pastels... just like a hint of color to give me an idea what I'll be working with... I like it so far and hope to finish later this evening after I'm done wandering around and do things what have to be done first.

This study was started in Holbein DUO Aqua Oils on Aquabord by Ampersand. i started it as aqua-media painting and finished up with traditional Charvin oils. It was great exercise what let me take advantage of unique qualities DUO oils applying it to "Aquabord". I think I like it.

I'm happy to mention that I finally called this painting finished.
It was one of those works what I just can just keep going and gong.
But sometime it should be right time to stop, even perhaps you could do more with it...
Now the only "more" part I have to do - varnish it and frame it... sometime.
As for now I just have to leave it along and let it dry.
I also will have to start shopping for frame, what is always fun part.
Good possibility it will be a nice California Plain Air style frame...
kind of like this one, what I Photoshopped together with painting , just to see, if I like it... and yes I do!

I'm pretty sure I'm ready for another project now and that one will be a complicated one...
I'm testing some of my new ideas and approaches of handling my Oil Pastels... If everything will work out, how I predicted, it could be interesting new way of painting...
But this will make totally different post for this blog.

And nothing new... I still working on those Orchids off and on... I have the same feeling about it as I had with my Oil Pastel "Koi Pond". It is a long-term project, what is designed to be only better with each new glaze applied. Surprisingly, each new layer of paint going on even better... Or I just getting used to it?... mean while my REAL Cymbidum Orchids are doing just fine outside making a company to our dwarf tomatoes. I'm looking forward to see them blooming this fall.

Daily painting? Not really!

Étude with Mountains.

We all had (and more then once!) one of those days when you really feel, like painting, but rest of the World seams to be plotting against you. Every 15 minutes or so somebody's head will pop up in your studio (or whatever working space you have) and declare another local disaster what should require your immediate attention.

In my younger years I used to kept stuck of forks on my room and throw it out, as soon I see that door starting to open... Yes it was silly and I gave up that brilliant idea... However if you have THAT kind of day, it is clear - you can not work on painting that is very impotent to you and takes few weeks to finish. Yet, you still can do something... better something good, but what perhaps doesn't take too much of commitment and concentration. You can actually finish it in between doing dishes, talking with your daughter on a phone about one more boy-friend-related-disaster and and fixing-upping of whatever what suddenly broke when you expected it to work.

This is when smaller paintings can fill up the gaps, let you try something new without stressing you out to the point you don't even want to continue...

So... with busy summer I keep in my mind that practice makes perfect and do some of those smaller works, what I would like to call "Études", what is appropriate French (and Russian!) word for "Study".

Those are NOT "Daily Paintings" what are so popular our days. I'm not targeting to have one finish EVERY day. I'm not chasing an idea that I have to finish this work at one session or even at one day. The general idea is - to paint, to learn something new with every painting, to try something new

(new support, new method etc) and .. yes! To have it finished in a few hours, not in a few weeks.

Then, if it was successful session, I'm going to put it on e-bay as I used to do a while ago and get rid of it, because I have no intention to keep all my studies and sketches.

So, here we go...

I ll be posting off and on those new series of "non-daily études" in between of working on something what takes more of me to accomplish.

I'm trying to correct my dark values and bring it back where it belongs. From the shadows to the light - this is whole idea of this painting. I lost it somewhat after working with pinks tones on petals, but now I like it better. Look like tonight will be a good time to do some more.

Painting and disasters.

"Backlighted Cymbidium" Egg Tempera and Oil 12 x 9" WIP.

I didn't post anything for about a week this time.. Reason is simple - I didn't paint. The reason WHY I didn't paint is not so simple - in the middle of last week we got hit by good sized tornado. Local weather, news and infamous local Electrical Company says nothing about this situation. I guess everybody was celebrating Memorial Day.Whole area was without electricity, water, any utilities for almost 5 days with some record breaking heat on the top of it. Humongous trees and high-voltage wires were down, cars and some houses got damaged - no even word in the outer world... I have one word for it - NASTY.
Therefore I'm only posting the last update what I took some pictures of right before the storm. Hope to be back to it as soon I can.

This is very beginning stage of Oil glazing... general idea to do it nice and easy and have tempera painting completely sealed with Oil. Tempera has a tendency to act like a sponge and soaking a big amount of oil (medium) in. It gives to the picture matte finish, even after oil was applied. When everything is carefully sealed, I just will continue with glazing of "Oil on oil.

One more painting of Cymbidum Orchids I'm working on right now... This time it will be combination of Egg Tempera and Oils with Tempera being used mostly for value map and Oils - for color stage.
I'm working on Ampersand Claybord panel. Original drawing was transfered to the board with home-made carbon paper and then imprinted into clay with very small brush and India Ink (partially diluted with water, to keep lines lighter.) Now I'm working on value stage in B/W scale using of 2 colors of tempera - Ivory Black and Titanium White...

Painting is starting getting more and more finished look... Still - it is not finished and I need time for it to dry in between from one glaze to another... I think after all it is just going to work out, but we better wait with any conclusions, till it is done.
PS. There is a one thing I dod not like about this painting at all - time when I need to take a good picture of it and all I'm getting - whole bunch of reflections. :-(

Those are Cymbidium orchids from my personal collection. They live in my grooming room, what has the most windows in the house. I like to have plenty of light and they do too. How You can see, I worked some more on my Orchids and it started getting some sort of finished look, even it not even close to be finished. Today i started integration into this painting two more colors - one more tint of red and some blue... So far so good. I did nothing yet with my light areas, it is still gray scale with no color. I think flowers will be the last part I'm working on. Best for the last!

What can I say?... Nice! I always had a good feeling about my painting "Iris Garden"and was hoping that one day it will be show, where this my work will earn its recognition. Not because it is better then others, but just because it is simply beautiful work. And at my opinion beauty - this is what art should be about. Brining light to the human's soul, making us better, creating some mysterious link between the Sky and the Earth... This is how I see purpose of any good art work. If this is how painting makes me feel - I know it was successful painting.

I'm slightly disappointed with the fact that my order for an oil paint what finally arrived didn't have the crimson of right color what i need for my ruby bowel... I guess I have to continue my quest for acceptable ruby-red paint and so far I'm still looking, work on this painting. What is not such a bad idea after all... But i still need my paint!

Longwood Garden's Orchids. Oil Pastel WIP.

While I let my oil painting to sit around and dry, this is another project. Framed size of painting going to be 20 x 16", but painting is an only 14 x 11'. I'm going to do several floral works after out visit at Longwood Gardens earlier this spring. This is a photo what I'm going to use for my first reference.

It was significantly modified from it's original version and I'm pretty happy with it now.

It took me about two evening to work on my drawing and then I transfered it to the board. Now, starting from the top, I'm carefully erasing outlined of my drawing and filling it up with color using some watercolor pencils. It is exactly the same process i used when i painted "Iris Garden". After I'll be done with pencils, I'm going to turn drawing into watercolor underpainting, because it works much better as underpainting for Oil Pastels compare to pencils. When it will be done the most fun part will be ready to start. I'm not sure how much time it would take to accomplish - for the simple reason, I have more then one painting in progress and I'm giving my priority to Oil painting first. So all depends. Mean while, this one is progressing .

"Orchids in Ruby Glass" Oil 12 x 12" WIP.

I didn't paint mush lately, because was too busy with other things... and today it is a perfect day to paint in - weather is miserable and I simply do not feel like emerging to the house-work. Therefore I paint and maybe will even have something accomplished. Still working just with two color, what are no colors, but value scale. It is getting more interesting. I just have to keep in mind I decided to stay away of Oil Pastels this time... I have another orchid painting for Oil pastels in my mind... gorgeous idea (hopefully will be gorgeous painting too!). But with 3 started painting I better have something finished first before trying out anything new... even if it is gorgeous.

Mostly finished with whatever in inside of my bowl (not entirely, but somewhat) and about to start on bowel itself and peripheral areas of painting. It will take a while yest, before I an move to color.

"Orchids in Ruby Glass" Oil 12 x 12" WIP.

I have my own reasons why I had to put my pastel painting on hold... just temporarily and start this oil painting Instead. Same picture, different medium. More slow process and more time to think about it all. I'm working on Ampersand 12x12 Gessobord with no other primers, but factory gesso (what I love, BTW!). Beginning stage will be total gray scale. no color, just value underpainting. I'm continue to use my DUO Oils with some Liquin. Not much done for one day, but what done is done. The hardest part about this painting will be to keep those Oil Pastels in the box. This has to be an Oil. Not an Oil Pastel!... (Temptations, temptations!..)

"Orchids in Ruby Glass" Pastel 11 x 11" WIP.

Latest project. few evenings of playing with camera and thinking of another Still life... or two.
And I think this is going to to be the ONE. Flat Ruby-glass bowel on a dark wood with some floating orchids.
Lot of time for photo-shoot, lot of time with Photoshop and now I'm down to dilemma what I'm going to do about drawing part. Flowers are not hard to draw, but i have not easy geometric pattern with all reflections on the bowel... So this time I'll have to do drawing with the greed, I like it, or not. I'm going to draw on my support, hopefully without any additional image transferring involved. Mid-gray PastelMat, off white pastel pencil. maybe tomorrow I'll have a chance to start with some color too.

Slowly moving along with my landscape. Had some work done today, not much,
but with the right feeling to it. I'm trying to keep it this time about color and feeling. About that moody attitude and not so much about detail... So far not bad. Maybe just a little bit more... Will be nice to finish it before this month is over... Or perhaps even before the end of this week.

Yesterday evening I was surprised with a great news. "Iris garden", one of my very favorite Oil Pastel paintings, was chosen as one of finalists by the International Artist magazine Challenge #62
"Flowers and Gardens" Competition and will be published in "International Artist" issue #78 April/May 2011.
Now I have to do some writing part about my painting methods etc., what also going to be a part of this publication. And.. I don't have much time to do it, therefore this evening I better get busy!

Back to Ever Glades.

After "Blossom" premiere we had one more day in Florida and took full advantage of it by going to Ever Glades and Big Cypress National Wildlife Preserve.

OK, I again got sun burn in the middle February (will I ever learn?!)

But photos I brought home worth all the straggle. :-)

Leaving for Florida very early this morning. Tomorrow will be official opening and award ceremony of "Blossom-II". I hardly can wait to see all those beautiful works of art. This is a totally amazing event for me. Hardly can wait. But... Tomorrow is another day!

This is just a little "something" I did yesterday night and today evening. I took 8 x 10" canvas board and coated it with Colourfix primer (2 coats). When primer dried i did elementary oil pencil sketch. then went with first layer of Oil Pastels and solvent (Gamsol). After it dried overnight finished it with another layer of Oil Pastels.

I only used few sticks of Holbeins out of my little 40 color set. It was fun.

I used same photo reference I did before for my soft pastels, but rearranged those oranges a little

to keep it more simple.

BTW, here is one of my favorite books on Oil Pastels. I have few, but this one is my favorite and tells it all.

John Elliot is an amazing artist.

I'm about to start another 12 x 12" landscape of Wildwood Lake sanctuary.
This is a reference I'm going to use. Already digitally modified to suit my needs. I'm going to start from some sketching and then work with watermedia underpainting. Then it will be time for pastels. Perhaps I can start on it this evening, if that very TV in the living room ever will go off.
And guess what?... few hours later mission is accomplished!

I was very not happy with my Oil pastels and this board, because of length of drying time and not enough adhesion to support... But I finished it, let it plenty of time to dry and put 3 coats of Golden varnish on it. I think experiment with varnish was very successful. So after all it was not totally wasted time and art supply. I will do another one on canvas only this time will put another primer over regular gesso. Hopefully it will make my work more easy and enjoyable.

I Think I'm so ready just to shake all the dust of, tape it to another board, put it on my easel and just carefully finish it it vertical position. Something tells me I can adjust my lights better this way and I'll have more room for those pastels without dropping downs another (or the same one) box.

Some more playing with the same Still Life. Mostly did some work on background, touch up on that apple and lots of Unisons on oranges... I LOVE that "Special Collection" from unison. Sweet poison of cadmiums and cobalts is looking so good!

Got to work some more on this Still Life. Trying some new strokes and ideas on it... Weird!... But there is a something about it... So far very limited amount of pastel sticks. few Holbeins, few Giraulds and 2-3 Unisons from so called "Special Collection" Few pencils too. fun! too bad I still only have one more piece of La Carte. Should get more sometime soon.

Finally have my monitor set-up waaay away from my computer (it works simply great!)
Starting my new project. Another Still Life and this time from my own reference (to be honest "reference is all long gone, but a plate...
It would be a total enjoyment, if forget about the fact that night before I managed to drop my favorite box of pastels and nearly killed it... Took about an hour to collect all the bits and pieces.
Hopefully I will continue with this painting tomorrow.

"Gallerie 13" January reception went great! Good music, nice company and many-many beautiful paintings and pictures and even some small things what you just can not ignore - artist note cards, beaded jewelries and much more. We all had a great time and I even managed to refresh some of my paintings and brought few new ones in. Above - some of my art works on the right and Cove Creek Photography prints on the left.
